Each year, millions of cats and dogs end up in shelters all over the country. Unwanted and unloved, they desperately wait to find their forever homes. PetSmart Charities is working to reduce that number and find a loving home for each and every one of them. That’s why we’re so proud to support Arrow’s Heart Animal Rescue, a nonprofit group in Minnesota, with a PetSmart Charities grant.
According to Randi Smelser, director and founder of Arrow’s Heart, the mission of the organization is to find well-matched homes for abused, neglected and unwanted animals. The group is run by volunteers and provides high-quality foster care for animals until they find their forever homes.
High Operational Costs Are a Hurdle
However, the costs of running the organization are expensive.
“In rescue, our biggest challenges are vet bills and foster home space,” said Smelser. “There are so many animals in need out there, and it is heartbreaking.”
In addition to routine veterinary care, the pet rescue treats special need animals that come in with heartworms, injuries, or eye damage.
That’s why the grant from PetSmart Charities is so impactful.
“PetSmart Charities has done miracles!” said Smelser. “With the grant money, we can get the animals vetted for the adoption. We also use it to for advertising, billboards, and business cards.”
Meet Lucky
Because of the support from organizations like PetSmart Charities, Arrow’s Heart Animal Rescue can help animals like Lucky. He spent more than a year in the shelter, but thanks to adoption events hosted at PetSmart, he was adopted and taken home.
